9 Burglary

Mr. Wilson was feeling quite cheerful as he went to open up his shop, but that soon changed. As he put his key in the door, he realized that something was wrong. The door was open. He immediately realized that someone had broken into the shop during the night and felt both angry and afraid. Although the shop had an alarm system, it had not done any good as someone had switched it off. Furthermore, the burglar had cut off the phone, so Mr Wilson had to go a long way down the street to a public phone box in order to send for the police. It was quite early in the morning and he did not want to disturb the people in the neighbouring house. The police arrived at the shop shortly after the shopkeeper returned and said that they would examine the shop to look for fingerprints and other clues. In the meanwhile, they asked Mr. Wilson to see
if there was any money missing from the till and to write down a list of any items that had been taken. The burglar had smashed several of the glass shelves and had broken a window, but the police asked Mr. Wilson not to sweep up the broken glass until they had finished. By the time the shopkeeper had carried out his instructions, the police had done all they could and left. Mrs. Wilson arrived just then saying, “Thank goodness
the burglar did not beat you up!”
