There was great excitement at Langham College of Drama. A well-known theatrical company had contacted the college and said that they were scouting around for new talent. They had gone on to say that they would like to audition some of the college students for parts in their next productions, and had
arrived to weigh up the merits of the students. Since the company ranked among the most successful in the country, it was a wonderful opportunity for the students, and many of them were brimming over with enthusiasm. They were also nervous, knowing that the possibility of employment with the theatre company hinged on how well they performed on that one day. Emily said that a touch of nervousness brought out the best in her and improved her performance. Not many of the others agreed with that philosophy. They wished that they felt more confident about the whole thing. Matt was feeling particularly lacking in confidence. He had been trying to learn a long speech from Shakespeare but, instead, had got bogged down in it. Now, he was feeling very depressed. At the start of the auditions dozens of students had trooped into the section of the college assembly hall, which, the organizers had partitioned off for the occasion. However, it was now mid-afternoon and those holding the auditions were gradually whittling away at the number of would-be actors. It would not be long before the students discovered which had been successful, and which would have to wait for another audition.
