38 Bullying

Tim’s parents were very worried. A few weeks ago, he had had to change schools and he was very unhappy. When he was younger, he had been very shy, but he had grown out of that and had joined in all the activities at his previous school. At first, Tim’s parents thought that his misery would blow over. They assumed he was missing his old friends. Yesterday, however, they had discovered from another parent at the school that a bigger boy in Tim’s class was picking on him. Although Tim was a pleasant, friendly boy, the other boy, called Nigel, had taken against him for some reason. Worse than this, he had encouraged several other boys to gang up on Tim and to push him around. Nigel and these boys both called him names and attacked him physically. Tim hadn’t known what to do. He was afraid to tell on the bullies because they had said that, if he did, they would treat him even more badly. He had tried to ignore their bullying and to walk away from it, but that hadn’t worked. They just bullied him more. On the other hand, the boys were all bigger than he was, and he was afraid to hit them back. When his parents found out about the situation, they realized that it had gone far beyond teasing and reported it to the head teacher. Nigel was suspended from school, and the other boys given a stern warning against bullying.
