24 The Winners

Alex and Julie were preparing to play in the final of the tennis club mixed doubles. For several years in a row, they had won it easily, but, last year, their opponents in the final had beaten them soundly and had walked off with the cup. Neither Alex nor Julie had played well, and they felt that they had shown
themselves up. They knew also that some people in the club had leveled a great deal of criticism at them because of their poor standard of play in the most important match of the year. This year, they were determined to do well and to win back the trophy, although they were pitted against two very strong players who were considerably younger than they were. Because of this determination, they had trained hard and practised regularly. Much to the annoyance of Julie’s husband and Alex’s girlfriend, they had done very little but work and play tennis. They had even taken time to rough out a game plan. All this preparation, they hoped, should bring them victory. Despite the criticism which they had received, they still had loyal supporters, several of their friends being seated round the court all ready to cheer them on. When they went on court, they were trusting to luck as well as banking on their tennis skills. Indeed, luck was on their side. Both sets of players were evenly matched, and it was a hard-fought match. However, Alex and Julie carried off the trophy.
