It was only half-way through the university session, but already Frank’s bank account was overdrawn. He hadn’t realized how bad the situation was, but a letter from the bank manager had just made him face up to the problem. It dawned on him that he would have to do something to reduce his overdraft right away. Sadly, he wasn’t very good at coping with financial matters. He should have had enough money to cover all his expenses for the whole session, but he had been very careless with it. He had frittered a great deal of it away on beer and fast food, and he went to the cinema a lot. Then, for the first few weeks of term, he had had a girlfriend with expensive tastes, and the gifts which she expected had eaten into his allowance. If at all possible, he did not want to resort to getting more money from his father. Besides, he would have to explain away his present financial predicament, and that would not be easy. It was a pity that he had fallen out with his elder brother or he could have asked him to cough up a loan, until he got a job in the summer vacation. In the end, he went to see his sister, who was quite a bit older than him and in a well-paid
job. He coaxed her into giving him a loan and felt very fortunate that she had agreed so willingly.
