20 A Stress Test

A group of people had been herded into a room in a country house. “I can´t think why our manager sent us here,” said Miriam to her colleague, Colin. He replied, “I think it’s to assess leadership ability and to see how we bear up under stress. Some of it is about problem-solving. Our firm doesn’t have an in house training programme which deals with that kind of thing. This organization arranges such training weekends regularly. As you can see, there are people from several other local firms here. Miriam was not impressed and said, “I’d never heard of the idea till last week. Trust our management to hit on the idea of making us do this kind of thing at a weekend. It wouldn’t be so bad if we were missing work.” Just then a man with a clip-board entered the room and separated the group up into several smaller groups. He put each one of them in a separate room and gave out a number of sheets of paper. Then he said that the groups were each to work as a team and that they would be joined by one of the facilitators. Miriam felt that she did not fit into her group very well, partly because the others were considerably older, but she tried to enter into the problem-solving willingly. As they hammered out solutions to the problems, the facilitator at their table was busily writing. “I don’t really like this kind of assessment,” thought Miriam.
