14 Organising a Fete

A group of residents had gathered in the village hall to sort out the details of the summer fete. It was only March, but the committee always met early on to thrash out any new ideas and any likely problems. Meanwhile, Bill, who had just been appointed treasurer, was wrestling with the fete budget. He had remarked that last year’s figures did not make sense and had been told that the previous treasurer had not been very good. Two of the committees were trying to divide up the jobs for the actual day of the fete. They had a list of the names
of all the people who had helped in previous years, and had ticked off those who were likely to be available again. Then they had pencilled in some new names of likely volunteers, but that was still not nearly enough. “We’re going to have to look to some of the young people, I’m afraid,” said Mary. “Why don’t we ask young Becky Rowland to organize some of them? If she takes after her mother, she will be an excellent organizer.” At the same time the committee in charge of publicity were having an argument. Some of them thought that one or two posters would suffice, but others thought that they should not skimp on advertising if they wanted a large crowd. Talking of crowds,” said Paul, “we should tighten up security. Last year a lot of people came without paying the entrance fee.”
