12 A Shopping Trip

Winnie and Anne were going shopping because Winnie wanted to look for a new dress for the tennis club dance. Her father had driven them to the high street and dropped them off at their favourite shop. However, he had told them that he couldn’t pick them up there because it was a no-parking area. “Even if we arranged a particular time, I couldn’t guarantee that I would be here,” Winnie’s father had said. “The traffic wardens would most likely move me on.” The girls had told him not to bother to collect them and that they would see him
at home. Then they entered the shop. At first they spent some time just looking, anxious to nose out some bargains. After a while they picked out several dresses and skirts from the display rails. “Let’s try these on in the changing-room,” said Winnie. They had to queue, but finally got a cubicle each. Anne put on a short red dress and went to Winnie’s cubicle to show her. As she opened the curtain, Winnie covered herself up with her coat, saying, “Close the curtain, Anne! I’m in my underwear and people will see me!” Anne decided that the
dress did not suit her and Winnie agreed. She went back to her cubicle to take off the dress and decided that she did not want to shop any more that day. Since Winnie was in agreement with her, they went in search of a cup of tea.
