11 Gardening

Since spring was just beginning,Mike and Linda felt that they should tidy up the garden because they had neglected it during the winter. They wanted to plant some new bushes, but there were other tasks to do first. Linda dug up some old plants, which were past their best, and took them to the compost heap, while Mike said that he would chop down the old apple tree. This was not as easy a task as he had thought it would be, and, after some vain attempts with an axe, he decided to settle for removing some of the branches. He went to the shed to fetch his saw and began to cut off some of the larger branches. Just then their large black cat, Trixie, appeared. Some birds had been frightened out of the tree by the noise of sawing and were spotted by Trixie who suddenly pounced on one of them. Mike tried to stop her, but Trixie quickly carried off the wretched bird to the far end of the garden. Fortunately for the bird, Linda caught up with Trixie within a very short time and succeeded in rescuing the bird. In fact, it was not injured, although very frightened. Trixie made for the house not looking very pleased at the loss of her prey. Linda knew that it was part of a cat’s nature to try to catch birds, but was upset and agreed to leave off gardening for that day.
