1 The Missing Tickets

44 The Missing Tickets

“According to my horoscope in the local paper, I’m going through a very lucky phase,” said Mary, who was a firm believer in astrology, “and, so I’ve bought three lottery tickets.” Because she had to go out when the winning numbers were announced on the television, she asked her brother, Tom, to mark down the numbers for her, and then check them against the numbers on her tickets. When Mary went out, Tom was lolling about on the sofa, idly changing television channels. Since there was nothing on any of the channels, which he wanted to watch, he quietly drifted off. He woke up about an hour later to discover that he had missed the programme which gave out the lottery numbers. Mary was going to be furious. He was just trying to come up with schemes to discover the winning numbers before Mary got back, when they were flashed on the screen for the benefit of those who had missed the lottery show. How relieved he was! Then, he discovered a worse problem. He couldn’t find Mary’s lottery tickets anywhere. Perhaps their little sister had torn them up by mistake. Tom was absolutely frantic. What if he had lost a winning lottery ticket? Just then Mary came in, saying that she didn’t believe in astrology after all because she had taken a copy of her numbers and had checked them before she left work. Tom, once more, felt relieved and said nothing about the missing tickets.
